Sorry, I don't have a songlist for Svengali.
While we're here though... can anyone help me with the dates of the Alley Jekyll run? What I have is 24 May - 1 July 1990. I know that the show was extended a few times... was 1 July the original closing date? The final one after all of the extensions? Or something inbetween? If anyone can confirm the actual dates it ran there, I'd really appreciate it.
Best,
Peter

Oooooh, thank you!!! :D :D :D :D :D
Finally someone has a tracklist. Down the board I saw mention of a few songs that aren't listed in ths list. Is that because they were cut?
And will Svengali ever be staged again? From what I've heard, it has a stunning score

Which songs are you referring to? As your "Definitive songlist" post shows, there are a whole bunch of them. And without knowing which you mean, I don't know when they would have been added or removed from the show.

Many who have heard or seen Svengali do feel it's another great show. I don't have any definite news about another production, but it's always a possibility.
Best,
Peter

Well, these:
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
In the Silence of the Night
Midnight
We Belong to the Night
and all the minor numbers that are credited on the concept album (i.e. Sympathy Tenderness: I'm assuming all these pieces were, because of their recitative-nature, uncredited)
plus, according to the liner notes of the '94 album (actually the highlights one I managed to get a hold of) I need to Know was apart of the show
And yes, from what I've heard of Svengali, I'd LOVE to see or be apart of that show
Juggler - September 19, 2005 01:36 PM (GMT)
Ok, I see the post you're referring to - "The Evolution of Jekyll & Hyde." HJ7Addict does mention these titles as being in the Alley production.
The song list that I posted came to me from a fan on the mailing list, retyped from the program during the Alley run.
I honestly don't know if these, and other minor numbers, were part of the show and simply not included in the songlist. Or if these were added or removed during that first run, or what else might have happened with them. Not sure about I Need To Know, either. If anyone has information to offer, I'm curious too!
Best,
Peter

I'm usually in the know on Jekyll: but the Alley production has always been a mystery to me
GeorgeM - September 20, 2005 06:14 PM (GMT)
I know I need to know was in the alley version but Sympathy Tenderness came later because it was actually underscoring called seduction. I would LOVE to hear good n' Evil with Stride and bisset. I wonder who Fenwik was though.....

I know I am bringing up an old thread, & I know I am answering this 5 years too late, but I do know what was in the Alley production version, & this is what songs were in it.
Act 1
Prologue
Lost In The Darkness
Facade
Sir Danvers
Love Has Come of Age
Lisa Carew
Board of Governors
Bring On The Men
Lucy Meets Jekyll
How Can I Continue On
<a song that mixed Possessed (but without using the lyric containing that word so it cannot be named possessed), the melody for Girls Of The Night but with completely different lyrics with a focus on the lines Your Dreams, & Once Upon A Dream. I call the song Your Dreams>
This Is The Moment
Transformation
Good'N'Evil
Lucy Meets Hyde
Alive
Your Work And Nothing More
Sympathy, Tenderness
Someone Like You
Alive Reprise
Act 2
Murder, Murder
The Girls of The Night
No One Knows Who I Am
We Belong To The Night
<a song where Lisa wishes to stay with Henry in the lab because she is worried for him, but he frantically tells her that she cannot stay there & that she has to go, I call it You Have To Go>
Once Upon A Dream
Reflections
A New Life
Sympathy, Tenderness Reprise
It's Over Now
Confrontation
The Wedding Reception
That is with 100% certainty how the show appeared during at least one point in it's original Alley run. I Apologize for the two songs where I do not know their real names. But I can assure you that this list is not speculation, it is the exact songs in the exact order they appeared at one point in the Alley Theatre Houston Texas production.

Thanks for bringing this thread back and posting this list, it's great info!
Could the first of those two mystery songs be called "In the Silence of the Night"? I have that title in my notes as a song for Jekyll and Lisa, but I've never heard it before.
holyguyver - April 4, 2010 04:57 PM (GMT)
No, that first mystery song is not In The Silence Of The Night as that lyric never appears in the song, also I know In The Silence Of The Night, I have heard it, & that song is not it.
In The Silence Of The Night is the second half of the song I Must Go On, Possessed on the 1987 demo, however the rules of this board state that we cannot discuss demos or that it is at least discouraged, so I am afraid I cannot talk more on In The Silence Of The Night. However I can post the lyrics to In The Silence Of The Night & to the mystery song Your Dreams if you wish to permit me to?
holyguyver - April 10, 2010 07:55 PM (GMT)
Well since you haven't responded yet I guess I will post the lyrics & if it is not allowed just let me know & I will edit the post to remove them, because I do not wish to break any forum rules. In fact I will only post excerpts (parcel lyrics) right now, & if you say it is okay to post the full lyrics I will.
Here is In The Silence of The Night, now remember it is so short because it is the end of I Must Go On, Possessed:
LISA:
If both of us believe in you,
And I know that we do,
Then for a moment leave it be,
relax, and turn your thoughts to me and you.
In the silence of the night
I simply need to know you're near
for all my fears to disappear.
JEKYLL:
In the shadows of the night
you fill my heart with such desire,
you set my very soul on fire.
LISA:
I feel complete again,
and life is sweet again!
JEKYLL:
There's a wonder to the night,
so many secrets we can share,
that only lovers dare to share.
So darling if you dare,
then let me take you there!
& here is the lyrics of the song which was sung during the Houston Premiere, it is sung at the end of How Can I Continue On after several verses of Possessed (without the part of it containing the word possessed though, so it is not Possessed):
LISA
In a world of utter madness-
you seek the light,
but you are blinded by the sadness-
that's yours tonight.
Yet until you find the answer-
you will never be content
your dreams are a part of you,
your dreams are the heart of you.
when this all began,
you knew there would be a price to pay,
too late now to turn away,
you have come so far,
I know you'll find a way.
JEKYLL
When this all began
I knew there'd be a price.
Interestingly both of those excerpts begin right after the line "What by God am I supposed to do?" from Possessed, so both songs are related, but as you can see they are not the same song. One is a drop-in replacement for the other.
Fantasma da Opera - April 10, 2010 08:56 PM (GMT)
Please notice that the posting of lyrics, being copyright material is not allowed. It's in the rules ;)
holyguyver - April 10, 2010 09:46 PM (GMT)
Okay, that is why I asked Juggler for permission, but he did not respond, & I thought maybe if I only posted excerpts it would be allowed as people have excerpts of lyrics in their sigs & such. So Fantasma, should I remove the lyrics excerpts above or wait until Juggler sees them since he was so interested in the two songs?
the poster George above's sig is a lyric excerpt, & also his avatar, & your sig image are all copyrighted material. So where is the line if no copyrighted material is to be posted? I am curious about this.
EDIT:
I just went back & re-read the rules
"Lyrics and Scripts: Song lyrics and scripts are copyrighted material, and should not be posted on these boards. This refers to full song lyrics - it is permissible to quote a few lines of a song as part of a discussion or in your signature."
:) That is wonderful as since what I posted above was not the full lyrics & only a few lines, it should be permissible.
"Photographs: Taking photos of performances in many theaters is illegal. Those photos should not be shared or discussed here. Photos taken by fans at the stage door are legal. Photos ar typically held under copyright by their photographer. This means you shouldn't post a photograph that was taken by someone else, including production photos or headshots, unless you have secured their permission to do so. Instead, try posting a brief description and then a link to the photo(s) elsewhere on the web."
Well :( now that does still call into question most people's avatars & sigs as they are images not taken by the user, & even with sigs, even if the user created their image as you might have, I am sure you did not take that picture which is on the right of your sig, which would still be copyrighted by the original photographer. So is there an exception for avatars & sigs? (My avatar is a picture of me, & my sig is my personal motto which I wrote)
If you respond to this I hope that it is either in a PM or else in one post which leaves no further questions as I do not want this discussion to hijack the thread.
Fantasma da Opera - April 11, 2010 12:02 PM (GMT)
I'm a Moderator I can answer you that, I hope in the clearest way possible.
- Yes, small parts are allowed which is not allowed is full lyrics or entire scripts. You can for example post a lyric where you want to find out a part of it. That happened before (check the Monte Cristo threads on the English Concept). But full lyrics are not allowed.
It's just to warn since you're new around here ;)
- As for the photos, it's the posting of photos that is not allowed. Of course if you took photos os a performance without the Theater's permission it's even worse. The continuous posting of official photos is not allowed. Like "Here are some photos of the Vienna production of Jekyll & Hyde *inserts tons of pictures*. For that, you post a link to the official site where they are.
- The avatars are small pieces that are normaly cuted from bigger pictures. It doesn't represent a real copyright violation and they are allowed in every official site and here it's no different. That's why no copyright holder ever beefs with avatars. If you check for example, the RUG forums, you'll see the same thing and they're normaly much more restrict. In these cases is a question of where to draw the lign. Just like the using of some bars of copyrighted songs in TV shows etc.
This could lead into a big debate on that and as a Lawyer I could spend many hours around this but I doubt you would understand half of the legal babling
(As for my personal ones, I actually bought both images which are from the viennese productions of Rudolf and Rebecca but anyway...)

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it. I am not new around here though, I have been a member for half a year.
Anyway I hope Juggler is happy with the lyric excerpts I posted, I hope they help him in becoming a little more better acquainted with two early versions of the song I Must Go On/Possessed/How Can I Continue On, those surrounding lyrics of which I did not post.

You're right. Sorry. I keep thinking we're still in 2009...
Juggler - April 13, 2010 04:50 PM (GMT)
Hey, sorry to go quiet on things, I've been busy.
Fantasma is right, as is holyguyver about the printed rules. Copyright issues can be really tricky, since people have different interpretations of things (some want things to be "more available" others want a a hard and fast - whoever created it, controls it). If anyone has questions about things you're welcome to check with me or a moderator about them.
The lyric excerpts are certainly interesting (and acceptable here). That particular spot in the show is one where things have been changed around a lot, and it gets pretty confusing especially when we're trying to stretch back to what is now twenty (!) years ago. A lot of those early changes were made for good reason, so while it's fun to poke around and wonder "what was" - in one sense those bits are probably best left in the past. <_<
Best,
Peter
