Juggler - August 21, 2008 03:11 PM (GMT)
A tribute concert, titled "Lyrics by Don Black" was just presented at the London Palladium last Sunday... and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 tomorrow (Friday, 22 August) at 7:30 pm GMT. Information is available on the BBC's website:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/musicclub/event_donblack.shtml

No word if anything fromDracula will be included. Just thought I'd put this out there in case anyone wants to try and catch it.

Fantasma da Opera - August 21, 2008 06:24 PM (GMT)

Don Black is a great talent. I still remember the conversation I had with him about 3 years ago. Amazing.

Yes, GMT = London Time.

Fantasma da Opera - August 22, 2008 02:39 PM (GMT)
Thanks Peter ;)

And Rockfenris2005:
He may be a fascinating guy, I don't say he isn't, but I, myself, don't like his lyrics that often...And its the songs they'll choose I'm curious and..."concerned" :P

So did anyone end up listening in?

Fantasma da Opera - August 23, 2008 01:46 PM (GMT)
Yes I heard it. Well, very disapointing. They focused a lot in Don's career outside Musicals. They sung a couple of ALW's songs, and Don thanked him etc etc, but no word about Frank or his musicals whatsoever (unless I didn't heard it, since I took a 20 minute break to have dinner, but when I left they were in 1972 and when I came back they were in 1992 with Aspects of Love, so no Frank there...)

Juggler - August 23, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
The songlist has now been posted - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/fridaynight/playlist.shtml

No Wildhorn listed there either. Sorry it was a disappointment Fantasma, but thanks for checking it out and reporting back to us.

Too bad. I think Don's a decent lyricist-- just not extremely consistant. I like him better than Jack Murphy when it comes to Frank's works. However, Nan Knighton is my personal favorite.

rockfenris2005 - August 24, 2008 07:29 AM (GMT)
"Dracula" was one of the worst blunders of Don's career. "Fresh blood on the pillow, don't call it a sin, a mere peccadillo, two punctures in the skin", anyone?

Fantasma da Opera - August 24, 2008 06:56 PM (GMT)
To me worse than that is "Ever since I saw you, shivers down my spine, you're the one, you're the chosen one, I'm here to make you mine"...

At one point I was hoping that Dracula would pu on a mask and say "Luke, I am your father" :P

And I must agree, from all the lyricists Frank has worked with Nan Knighton is by far the best. Pitty he doesn't work with her more often.

True, considering the lyrics of Dracula are not so great, I'm not surprised nothing was included in this concert.

It's really Wildhorn's music I love about Dracula as opposed to any of the lyrics. Still... would've been nice to hear some!
