Title: Norwegian Cast Recording

Juggler - June 20, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
Hi folks,
I'm pleased to announce that there is a new cast recording for Pimpernel. A double CD was just released yesterday from the Norwegian premiere production (last fall in Kolbotn, Norway). The first disc features the primary cast from the production, and the second disc features the alternate leads, who took over halfway through the run.

The complete track list and a purchasing link are posted on the Pimpernel site and Nan Knighton's site. I'm still double checking if there might be any issues with international orders. I'll post more info as I have it.

Best,
Peter

This one came completely out of the blue

Yeah, I did not see that coming. It's an interesting track listing though. Haven't seen "Home Again" on a recording since the concept.

Also, what is this track: "Ouilles gavotte" ?

Juggler - June 26, 2008 01:24 PM (GMT)
I haven't heard of any production using "Home Again" on stage, until now.

The "Ouilles Gavotte" has always been part of the show, but we don't hear the title very often. It's part of the underscoring in the Ball scene, where people are shifting around, talking to each other. Ron Melrose, the Broadway music director, likes putting joke markings in his scores. So he named that part of the underscore the "Ouilles Gavotte." There's no such place as Ouilles... it's a wordplay on "oy gevalt."

You'll also notice that they include both "I'll Forget You" and the prison version of "You Are My Home" near the end of the show. How do they do this? Chauvelin sings "I'll Forget You."

I haven't listened through the second CD yet, only the first. The recording quality leaves something to be desired, but the performers are good enough. And especially if you feel that you just have to have every recording there is... well, it's out there.

Best,
Peter

Chauvelin sings "I'll Forget You"? Very strange. Sounds like Sven Torneberg wanted an extra song to sing in the show (seeing as how he's on both discs as Chauvelin too).

That sounds confusing. I can't figure that out at all. Chauvelin? I'll Forget You?

All I can really say is, "yes... Chauvelin... I'll Forget You." I guess he's singing it to give up Marguerite, but in thinking about it more, it seems a bit strange.

There wasn't an alternate Chauvelin in this production, so Sven Torneberg played the part opposite both Percys and Marguerites.

It also seems that "Where's the Girl?" was dropped from this production, so that's one less song for Chau.

I guess if you are going to drop the song "Where's The Girl", which is one of my favorite for Chauvelin; you better give him another song.... And you know "I'll Forget You" could be a good replacement for him to sing.

However, it takes away what they do for Marguerite concerning Percy. I do not understand why they removed "Where's The Girl". All three actors (Percy, Chauvelin, and Marguerite) needs a song to talk about their feelings for the person they love.. In my humble opinion. LOL

"I'll Forget You" just doesn't fit Chauvelin's character in my opinion. When Marguerite denies his advances, he' supposed to get extremely PISSED-- not sad. This is evident by "Where's The Girl" (Reprise). Of course there could be an underlying sad emotion, but it's not in Chauvelin's nature to have anyone see that side of him (even the audience). He's also more than willing to have her beheaded/hung, so I don't really think he needs help "forgetting" her like the song is intended.
