Title: My opinions of Jekyll and Hyde the Musical

Edit: Ug, old review. I disagree with this so much now that it's been brought up again.

Hello Ryan,
in Bremen, "Lost in the Darkness" was performed right before "I Need to Know" and I always felt it worked extremely well. The combination of these two songs, to be seen with the scene at the Board of Governors explained IMHO sufficiently Jekyll's reasons. I never thought that his research was only triggered by the illness of his father, but rather enlarged, strengthened and pushed forward to a degree only obsessed people can reach. Jekyll tries to find a remedy to help his father which we are told in "Lost in the Darkness", he needs to know how to release humankind from evil which is told in INTK and the Board of Governors is Jekyll's stage where he finds justification for his pursue. "Schaut euch nur an" (Look at yourself) is he shouting, disgustedly looking at all these people who are worth less than nothing and hypocrites as Hyde puts it so nicely.
Jekyll is a far too complicated man as only one song can tell us his reasons. The psychology behind it is hidden in many songs...
Regards,
Birgit

I LOVE ROB CUCCIOLI. His Transformation/Alive is STUNNING.
Who doesn't love Rob?? Who??
Actually... nevermind.
:-)
So anyway, I happen to really like some of the songs cut from the Broadway CD. I like Board of Governors for some reason, I Need to Know is a fabulous track, and I adore Girls of the Night.

I like Board of Governers too. Simon Stride is my favourite lesser-character. And he gets a nice snarling chance to.....shine there.

In the production I was involved in, Board of Governors was the hardest number to do, and it seemed really slow to me. But I like listening to it professionally. It's pretty cool.

I wish they had of kept The World hs Gone Insane
(or, as I call it, the Wildhorn's Gone Insane lol)

I'm going off track but can someone tell me which number Lost in the Darkness is on the Anthony Warlow recording? Please help me! I'm very new to Jekyll and Hyde but glad I've got into it!

Lost in the Darkness isn't on the (Warlow) recording
(Thank God :D )

Thank you I was having a heated discussion with a friend and he was certain it was on it! You don't like Lost in the Darkness? What's your favourite song then? :P

I like the whole album (the Warlow one). I like the arrangements on the Broadway recording: but the intensities are all wrong. I'd have to say my favourite is The World has Gone Insane or the Confrontation. They are thrilling. Also ALIVE! when it's done right..
I don't likeLost in the Darkness, and the father-son story. I like the idea of a man who's gone insane over this experiment for many many years: losing his mind: as mad as Jekyll himself: because he's lead this ultra-conservative, concealed life and he just wants to break out. For me, that father-son story is just inane: and so is that song. I hate it
Tobias_Bloodworth - October 3, 2005 08:58 PM (GMT)
I see! So you like the more exciting and far fetched songs, you're not into the soppy songs like lost in the darkness and letting go?
So if you could choose who would you pick :- Jekyll or Hyde? And why? That would be an excellent new topic! (Why didn't I think of that before?) <_<
And I agree if ALIVE and Confrontation aren't done right, then they competely ruined, Jekyll and Hyde is a one man show, the other cast and chorus members can be perfect but if Jekyll/Hyde isn't good it just ruins the whole musical!

I like the idea of the concert: just three people:
I can't wait to hear the album for that

Yeah, pretty much.
In the two productions I have done, Jekyll/Hyde has been just wonderful... so I can't really imagine it being any less than superb.

Rob has is good moments...I judged this Broadway Kids Talent Show with him for a day and he was really awesome, but when he hits some high notes he sounds like Kermit the Frog. Just my opinion. Other than that I think he's great.

Actually I've been known to chant 'exorcism' rites at my speakers everytime Rob comes on. He's just... YAAAOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!! Don't even go there
Board of Governors is too long. Girls of the Night is too passive
I wish they had of kept The World hs Gone Insane (or, as I call it, the Wildhorn's Gone Insane lol) |
Board of Governors is WAY too long and obnoxcious. It's really corny and not very moving. I can do without it. It's like when all of the Board sings "NAYYY!!", they want the audience to have sympathy towards Jekyll. But we really haven't known him for too long in the show to really feel terrible for him. So therefore that entire scene is one big humorous waste of time.

But... it has such a nice rhythmic flow to it... okay... so I'm out-numbered...
...backs away slowly...

Board of Governors would work if it was in the spot it was in on the concept album. It really worked there..
I have no idea who's idea it was to put it at the start: but whoever did deserves a slap in the chops

That thought has been sitting at the back of my mind for so long and you just expressed it perfectly. *presents bouquet of flowers*

Board Of Governors is good though (apart from the end 'NEIGH!' - That's just funny). It feels to me that at the start all the governors are respectable people with dignity etc, but at the climax of the song it turns into a huge brawl with shouting and screaming and they're completely different people.
Also, it's ironic that if he had listened to the governors, Jekyll & Emma would be happily married. But Jekyll would never have given up, in my opinion.
"And what if you're right, Jekyll? And you DO manage to separate Good from Evil [I] WHAT HAPPENS TO THE EVIL?!" :D

I find it quite interesting how u contridict urself by saying how much of a screw up this show is and yet still say i u want to play Jekyll, and that ur on this fan!!!-site. Facade makes perfect sense in the show because it leads into the board of governors who are all really really two-faced. It may be repetitive but i believe the whole show goes hand-in hand, well the broadway cast. I think the concept cast has too many unnecessary songs. The songs are repeated such as facade because it number one has different lyrics in each one and the company is pretty important to the show.

I agree that the position Board of Governers is in in the 1994 album is much better than where it was positioned in the Broadway production. The audience would feel a lot more sympathy for Jekyll if he is flatly turned down by the Board once the audience have known him for a while (seen his ambition for success, his relationship with Lisa/Emma, John, Sir Danvers, Stride, etc...
I love it in Board of Governers when the Board do start shouting and brawling with Jekyll... as Jekyll says it just epitomises the reason for his experiments. I also love the fact that Jekyll sounds very like Hyde towards the end of the song, clarifying the lyric - "Our darkest side keeps breaking through/Observe it now in me and you."

I like the idea used in the Japanese production, where at the end on The Way Back/Angst, they have scream in agony and play that theme. I wonder whythey haven't used that idea in other productions. :(
