Title: Colm wilkinson as Jekyll/Hyde?
NicolaeJettyCarpathia - July 24, 2005 06:40 AM (GMT)
He's definitely my least favorite actor of all the versions they have out. He sounds EXACTLY the same as every part he does, be it Phantom, Val Jean, or even Jekyll. It seems his voice doesn't even show much emotion. Anyone else feel this? He sucks as jekyll :-p

I have moved this topic to performers and contributors. And yes I have to agree with that, every time I hear Colm Wilikinson I can only hear Valjean hehehehe! He is my least favorite Jekyll/Hyde on the recordings, but I have feeling he might be better than Paul Nicholas... :P

Colms voice is oddly quite nice to hear in all the things he does. I like his Jekyll/Hyde, especially on "Till You Came Into My Life" - he has a very powerful voice.
Never seen him live, so can't really comment much on his acting. No doubt he is better than Paul Nicholas with his voice though ;)

My experience with him is from the Les Miz dream cast and "Hey Mr. Producer!" where he played the Phantom and then Valjean. I scared the living daylights out of a friend who was watching it with me by telling her that he had done Jekyll.
I haven't heard his Jekyll, though. I'd be interested to. He has a very pleasant voice, I quite like it, but some of the pronounciation of his words really annoys me. He'll sound normal, then all of a sudden he'll start singing some really bizarre vowel...

He has some sort of speech problem I believe. An overbite or something, which makes some of the phrasing of his words a little....different. You can hear soundclips of his Jekyll at:

Do I dare...?
My mother noticed this fact, too. My brother has a lot of health problems, one of them including an issue with the shape of his mouth giving him a speech impediment for several years, and my mother has pointed out that his mouth is shaped in a very similar fashion to Colm's... something to do with the alignment of the lips, or something.

I quite liked Colm but I will always see him as Valjean and thats whats ruined anything else for me I think. He was my first phantom per se (Hey Mr Producer) and my first Valjean so whatever he does I will always have a soft spot for him. :D

I love Colm in other roles, but not this one.

Heard Colm in several musicals:
EVITA (1976 concept album) - he was pretty interesting here
LES MISERABLES - all the versions (Gary Morris on CR sounds like a carbon copy of Colm)
HEY MR PRODUCER! - saw him inPhantom here, never gotten a hold of the Canadian CD
Have yet to find the '90 recording of J&H... but from what I've heard it's interesting

Eh, you can't really compare Wilkinson to anybody else because he's kind of in his own category as a performer. I really respect him for his range. God Bless the old man.

I've only heard Gary Morris, and tiny snippets of Colm. They did seem rather similar to me... did Colm come first, then?

Colm was one of the most important players in Musical Theater in the 1980's.
His talent is without doubt and I find him to be THE Valjean and THE Phantom (sorry you Michael Crawford fans, but come on)
Let us not forget that when he did J&H, it was only a concept album and much of the "character" traits we have grown to love had not yet been developed.
Plus, let's face it. Most of the music from that album sucked and that is why it never made it to" the complete work".
I think he did fine with it, but it was like asking Paverotti (sp?) to rap.

Yeah, Colm was the original (at least for English-language productions; there was one in France that came before). But IMO, Gary sounded awful on the CR, especially in "Bring Him Home." But I digress; I worship Colm in LM and Phantom. Not so much on the original Canadian album of POTO, though; he was much better when he did the role live.
I've only heard snippets of Colm in J&H, but I rather liked him... 'Twas interesting to hear all of Jekyll's songs in a much higher key.
