Title: Jekyll & Hyde: Resurrection
Description: aka the "concert" cd... anyone have it?

thisisnow_thatwasthen - July 25, 2006 09:27 PM (GMT)
Hey! I was just wondering if anyone else has bought Jekyll & Hyde: Resurrection (aka the "jekyll & hyde: the concert" cd) from Yesasia.com yet? It's the exact same music, but it's the packaging that was released in Korea when the concert came there.

I really like it in some parts, and other parts not so much. I'm kind of disappointed that it's only the Lucy/Emma/Jekyll Hyde songs though. I miss the others! (Especially "His Work and nothing more")

The new song, "If You Only Knew" is really pretty but I don't think it fits Emma's character very well. Or at least the character that is portrayed through the other versions' music. Maybe it's because this CD is more "rock" and it's hard for me to envision that song in the broadway version.

The songs I'm not too fond of are "Alive" and "The World Has Gone Insane" because of the random moments where it sounds too much like a KISS song. I think you can sound more "rock" without having to do the ... man, I'm sure there's a word for it... the like... "screeching" notes. ("ALIIIIIIIVE!")

Anyhoo, it was definately worth the price, and the wait.

I listened to some of the previews today... and I like some of it... But I'm antsy on some others. I like the 'gothic' version with Warlow the best and this conversion is a bit drastic, lol... But nonetheless it's another Jekyll and Hyde so I will get it :)

I have been listening non stop to the songs, I am obsessed with 'If You Only Knew'
and the heavier, rock styled songs (insane/confrontation etc) make me drive my car REALLY fast on my way to and from J&H rehearsals.I LOVE IT!Rob Evan does a great job of making it sound new and fresh but still retaining a nod to the versions we are accustomed to.

One thing I cannot stand, however, is the constant 'bending' and 'slurring' of the notes in Lucy's songs. That 'technique' is best saved for divas like Christina Aguilera and the like. It really doesn't fit in.I'm sure Kate Shindle has been directed to sing in this way so this is by no means a dig at her personally!!

Just my two penneth. ;)

Well, I've listened to this.
The only thing I can say - this is very odd. Only two tracks I'm sure are wonderful - Alive & Girls Of The Night. Most of the others may be done better. And World Has Gone Insane is just awful. New song for Emma is not bad, but it absolutely doesn't suit for the character and for the story. I like Jekyll/Hyde and Lucy's voices but not Emma's.

What everyone has to remember is that this CD doesn't represent any of the previous versions of Jekyll & Hyde. It's a fresh approach, a new angle on the concept. The sooner you can see that, the more you can appreciate it.

FireFuryFlame - September 16, 2006 12:36 PM (GMT)
Well, it's going to be a bit of a different experience for everyone because of it's new form... I'm not sure I'd be able to appreciate it as much as the older versions because I'm not a great fan of pop music. "Jekyll and Hyde" is, at its essence, a pop musical, but taking it out of the theatrical context and removing it to its purer pop roots will appeal to some but not others. Personally, I'm going to just have to take it as it comes. I haven't heard it yet.

I ave to admit after hearing it I was left disapointed. It seems to have lost its spark by changing the instrumentation or something. It sounds more jazz and the additional song just doesnt seem to fit into the previous score.

That's what I have to tell everybody. Like my mom. This new CD is a different animal to the stage show. That's how a lot of musicals are, always changing.

I bought the CD off of iTunes music store for my birthday. I like it. I'm not sure "If You Only Knew" fits into the context of the show, but I think it's a good song, and I like it. I don't like Brandi Burkhardt's voice as Emma, but I do like her voice for that song, I think that her ability to belt the high parts fits in with the despiration of the song. I still don't really like "The World Has Gone Insane" but Confrontation's okay, and Alive. I don't like any of the girl songs, really, because their voices sound too young for me. That is the problem with pop music, the women who sing it always sound years younger than they are. But I do like Rob Evan's voice. My most favorite part of the CD is that little electric guitar solo right before "I Need To Know." When I first heard that, it struck something inside me that felt like I've heard it before. I don't know what it was, but that's why I love that part so much.

I thought the CD was awesome! I had it pre-ordered off Amazon (or maybe Barnes and Noble - I dont remember!) so I got it as soon as they could ship it. :)

It has it's flaws, but overall I think it's great. I love the new rock n roll spin they put on MOST of the songs. "If You Only Knew" is a great song, but i see how some poeple say it doesn't fit Emma. The lyrics do fit her well, but the music is alittle too rock. Or maybe we're just seeing a different side of Emma! ;)

I'm not really a fan of any song that includes the shrieking/wailing/whatever you want to call it that Rob Evan is does sometimes, but I can get over it. They tried something new, sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't. Rob can really sing and sound sexy as both Jekyll and Hyde.

I hate the beginning of "Dangerous Game", but it picks up soon after and it's very enjoyable.

And I love Brandi and Kate's duets. Their voices really compliment eachother. :D

Tradionalists may not like this CD, but I'm openminded. On the whole I'd say the CD is great.

I like it, but I've only listened to it 3 times. I've listened to "The Complete Work" 300 times, probably hundreds and hundreds more

MadameAngel - February 13, 2007 10:53 PM (GMT)
Oh, me too, my friend!! I'm actually listening to it right now, but I've listened to the Complete Work many many more times! ha ha.

Edward_Hyde - February 15, 2007 03:36 PM (GMT)
I love that CD! I just got it recently and adore it.
I was upset by Bring on the Men's slowed speed, and lack of background vocals, though :(
Also, Girls of the Night, though wonderful, includes Emma, which makes no sense, as she is not a harlot.
I love all of Lucy's songs, and think Alive, COnfrontation, and A New Life were wonderful. I've heard so many compaints about the singing, musical score, etc., but, you should know that its a fresh take on the songs, and not a direct copy or even attempt.

IMHO, it rules :D

rockfenris2005 - February 15, 2007 04:22 PM (GMT)
Another thing I have to add is that I feel very drained after listening to it, whereas I always want more AND MORE after hearing The Complete Work. I don't know why that is because I think the new one is fairly admirable

It's not meant to be Emma. As in the concert staging, the woman singing the Emma part in other songs, switches to the part of Nellie for Girls of the Night.

Oh, okay--Thanks for clearing that up :D
How about all of the ensemble songs? Why were they not recorded, like facade and Murder, Murder

rockfenris2005 - February 15, 2007 07:00 PM (GMT)
Because it's supposed to be a concept featuring only Jekyll / Hyde, Lucy and Lisa / Emma.

Interesting thing about Nellie tho

I bought the CD from the iTunes Music Store the day it came out, and overall, I rather enjoyed it. For some reason, I think I preferred the new orchestrations for "Bring On The Men" to the original (probably because you can clearly hear the clarinetist). I also loved "Take Me As I Am" and "Girls of the Night," although the huge orchestra and string runs toward the end made "Take Me As I Am" sound more like something you'd hear in Les Misérables than J&H.

I thought they did a good job incorporating a heavy-metal sound in "Confrontation" and "Alive," but I wasn't fond of "Dangerous Game" or most of Jekyll's songs. However, I did like the version of lyrics they chose for "Dangerous Game" - not quite as overly melodramatic as the Broadway version. It kinda makes me wish they had these lyrics when they had done the recording with Anthony Warlow. :D

I also thought the CD may have benefitted if they had sung in a less pop-ish, more Broadway style; it was just odd to hear our beloved characters sounding like American Idol contestants. I'm now quite curious about which orchestrations Frank Wildhorn may decide to go with if he gets the film version off the ground... ^_^

And yeah, I agree that it'd be interesting to hear a more hard-rock-ish version of "Façade" or "Murder, Murder."

MadameAngel - February 23, 2007 03:32 AM (GMT)
Toru771, I totally agree about Take Me As I Am sounding like Les Miserables! I never noticed that, but as soon as I read your post, I had to listen to it, and you are so right! I love it when shows sound like other shows,

I'm currently listening to Bring On the Men, and it kind of sounds like she's laughing, it's awesome.

rockfenris2005 - February 23, 2007 08:16 AM (GMT)
Here's another example:

"In His Eyes" from J&H reminds me of "I Know Him So Well" from CHESS. This is also a counterpoint / duet between two women who are in love with the same guy.

Hi guys, I'm new here, but had to comment on the new cd.

I love the new "rock" versions of "I Need to Know" and "Alive". I like "If You Only Knew" but not really as a song for J&H.
I was dissapointed in "Girls of the Night" Am I imagining it, or didn't they cut an entire verse since Emma is singing it?
When J&H comes back to Broadway I really hope they put this song back in, the way it was done in the Texas/London version.
"It's A Dangerous Game" has always been my favorite song in the show. Again, I prefer the version on the Complete Works because that one gives you more of the feeling that Lucy is seduced my Hyde, where in the Broadway version there is a little bit of sexuality in it, but mainly fear.
I also liked the slight variation in "Once Upon a Dream" and wish they had done "Facade" and "His Work and Nothing More" for the album.

MadameAngel - March 2, 2007 01:16 AM (GMT)
I totally agree about Dangerous Game. The Broadway version mostly implies that Lucy hates Hyde, and fears him. In the Complete Work, you know she's attracted to him as well. I much like the complete work version better

Hi everyone! I'm new here...

I have this CD... I must tell that it's really beautiful...

I love "Alive"...

But my favourite song is "It's a Dangerous Game"....can a good soul tells me what difference is there between the B'way vers and the Complete Work?

PS= I hate Emma in GOTN...

MadameAngel - March 4, 2007 01:29 AM (GMT)
The lyrics in the Broadway version is different than the lyrics from the Complete Work. I prefer the CW, myself.

LucyHarris1993 - March 5, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
Alright thanks....I heard it just now... ;)

surisve_amore - April 25, 2007 11:24 AM (GMT)
Brandi Burkhardt is okay, but I think Kate Shindle's voice is kinda weak.

knightmuzic - May 11, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
Resurrection is the first version I've heard in its entirety. It's a good album on its own, and not comparing it to others (because that's how I first got exposed to J&H, through the Resurrection CD). "Alive" and "Confrontation" sound awesome, and "The World Has Gone Insane" sounds like it was a lot of fun to record. Oh, and I like "Bring On The Men" too.

I don't like "Dangerous Game" from Resurrection, though. I prefer the Linda Eder/Robert Cuccioli duet (1997 B'way cast album) a lot more.

Oh, and hi. I'm a newbie. *waves*

iloveselenagomezanddemilovato - July 4, 2008 05:21 AM (GMT)
I liked it I have a friend who has the cd and i am planing on buying it whenever i get some money.

Eddie Hyde - July 5, 2008 02:22 AM (GMT)
One thing I didn't like about this album is that they slowed Bring on the men. :(
