Title: Sherlock Holmes

A Sin With No Name - June 17, 2006 04:03 AM (GMT)
Hello all! I don't know about anyone else, but I simply adore Holmes and Watson! :D One of my favorites would have to be The Hound of the Baskervilles. I've seen two movie versions of it.

I was just curious about your opinions on the Great Detective. Has anyone read any of the original canon stories and some of the newer versions, or seen any of the movies on Holmes?

(I know I'm stepping out of the musical genre with this one! :) )

Ah, Sherlock Holmes! Though I have read some of the books, it was many, many years ago and I do not remember, but I do agree that Holmes and Watson are truly great! Since a police Inspector is basically a dective, he is another person that I look up to. Though it may seem strange to look up to most fictional characters, Javert for example, but still, they all give something that some people just adore.

Nice job for putting this up.

I have always threatened to write a musical of "Hound of the Baskervilles"

*is intrigued*

I recall you mentioning that on another post. It certainly sounds interesting.

Holmes is such an iteresting character, with his detailed observations and his drug addiction. If I remember correctly, Doyle wrote around sixty Holmes stories. In some of them, Watson mentions cases that were not written, which has caused other authors to try their hand in writing about them. The few that I've come across have been pretty enjoyable.

Some people have said that Doyle may have hated his own creation! He tryed to kill Holmes off, but had to bring him back due to public demand (or something like that). I think that's why he had Holmes be bested by the woman in A Scandal In Bohemia.

I admit, I haven't read a whole lot of Holmes, but I love "The Hound of the Baskervilles". I recently bought a book, "The Complete Sherlock Holmes" which has all of Doyle's stories and novels about him, and I'm going to start reading some of that. As for a "Baskervilles" musical, Ryan, like I said before, I really think you should add this to your "future projects list" (hehe, not that it's not already reeeaaallly long already, but still...) I think it could work well, if pulled off right. :)

I agree with Ash, you should really consider it. I think you can make it work. :)

Incidentally, while I was looking up books on Amazon, I discovered one entitled "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Holmes." Has anyone heard of it?

ashtonu - June 21, 2006 01:30 AM (GMT)
I haven't. But I remember that there's one novel in which Holmes meets The Phantom of the Opera. :)

A Sin With No Name - June 21, 2006 03:57 AM (GMT)
I think I've heard of that book. Was it called "The Angel of the Opera"?

ashtonu - June 21, 2006 07:14 AM (GMT)
Yep, that's the one. Never read it myself, but it actually looks pretty cool.

yes, "Angel of the Opera" that I found but positively refused to read. I'm an utter Holmes purist. I love every word penned by Conan Doyle... except the Mazarin Stone... but that's another story altogether.

Anyone know anything about the Bricusse musical "Holmes"? Apparently it was simply a flop and that's all that ever existed about it, according to my frantic googling. However you can still get the sheet music for it, and I've got a song on one of my many musical compilation CDs called "A Million Years Ago (or Was it Yesterday?)" from this same musical. I'd love to know more about it, if anyone has any information...

I find myself somewhat afraid now to mention that I started drafting a synopsis for a mini-musical of that show a year or so ago. It was amazingly dodgy.

Has anyone seen any movies of Holmes & Watson? I've seen two versions of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and a recent non-canon tale entitled "The Case of the Silk Stocking."

FireFuryFlame - October 27, 2006 05:42 AM (GMT)
I saw "Silk Stocking"! It was so bad I loved it.

And I'm a little biased about the Richard Roxburgh "Hound of the Baskervilles" simply because I'm in love with every single male cast member.

The Hammer Studios version is good. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee rock... definitely two of my favorite actors.

Did you know Whoopi Goldberg was married to Peter Cushing? She refused to take his last name because it sounded too.. well, you get the picture ;)
