Title: "Rudolf" returns to Hungary!

Fantasma da Opera - May 23, 2010 12:42 AM (GMT)
I learned that auditions took place so that "Rudolf" returns to the Hungarian stage, in it's original version after the flop of the Vienna version. The production will be staged in Pécs, a city in southern Hungary and will be directed by Somogyi Szilárd (who staged Spring Awakening, Abigél and Altar Boyz in hungary).

I wouldn't call RUDOLF a flop in Vienna. It's the media that says so. But if a show is running nearly one year nowadays I would say it's a great success.

It would have deserved much more success but media did everything to talk it down

Actually the worst reviews I read came from the audience members, normal people who saw the show and said it wasn't that good.

As for the flop...well, granted that shows in Vienna normaly tend to run longer, 1 year is little. Not to mention in the last months of performances the house has only half full.

I personaly think that the major problem of the vienna version, apart from the miscast of Uwe Kröger, is the changes made to the hungaran script and the awfull direction of the show. I would like to see one day Rudolf staged in Vienna with the hungarian script and staging. I'm pretty sure it would have been more successful.

I have to say I find the production very "cheap" by the looks of it. It also looks heavly inspired by the Vienna version instead of the original one.

Do you think there will be a cast album? I was surprised that the original production never had one.

I highly doubt it. The production in Pécs is a small one.
I was also surprised, it's not that usual for the Operettszinház to not release a Cast Album, specially when they're premiering a show...

However, since it was a co-production with the VBW I don't know if VBW didn't researved in their partnership deal the right to be the firsts to release a Cast Album in exchange for the premiere in Budapest. And since the show in Budapest closed before the opening in Vienna...I think a Cast Album will only be likely if there's a new production in Budapest.

It's a shame really. The Budapest production was quite superior to the Viennese one...oh well =\
