Title: Rudolf Vienna closing night

Edward - August 25, 2009 09:53 PM (GMT)
There's still no official confirmation by the VBW, but it seems "Ich war noch niemals in New York" will substitute "Rudolf - Affaire Mayerling" in 2010. For those who are aware of the German language: You may find a strange blog about that topic at http://www.kultur-channel.at/the-day-the-m...aimund-theater/

The rumor is on for some time. I wouldn't be surprised honestly. Apparently Rudolf is not doing that well and so it's probable they'll replace it.
Chosing "Ich war noch niemals in New York" is odd though. The show is fun, but it's not THAT good than can generate more money than Rudolf.
If they wanted to replace Rudolf I would have went with Marie Antoinette 'cause Kunze & Levay sell very well in Austria...Let's see what happens now. VBW will probably announce the show that will replace Rudolf once Rudolf re-opens.

"Ich war noch niemals in New York" is still doing well in Hamburg, and I think they indeed intend to earn more money with that show, otherwise they have probably chosen another show they can bank on.

The thing is, what works well in Germany doesn't exactly has to work well in Austria. Look at We Will Rock You. It wasn't much of a hit in Vienna and in Köln was ;) And Vice-versa. Elisabeth in Berlin wasn't that successfull and in Vienna always fills houses.

I think we'll have to wait and see, but I don't think Ich war noch niemals in New York will do so well in Vienna...it's just a feeling I have... ;)

Fantasma da Opera - October 19, 2009 03:37 PM (GMT)
It's official. Rudolf - the musical - will leave Wien in the exact same day Rudolf - the man - left Wien for the after-life (30 January). It will be goodbye for Rudolf again 120 years later.

VBW confirmed it's replacement with Ich war noch niemals in New York

It seems the date of the last show will not have such a historical relevance. VBW sells tickets for Rudolf only until 24 January.

Meanwhile it's official: Rudolf will have it's closing night on 24 January 2010. The first night of Ich war noch niemals in New York will be on 17 March 2010.

Fantasma da Opera - October 27, 2009 10:42 PM (GMT)
Pitty they changed the original plan of closing it on the 30th...
but on the other hand according to people in Austria it's been dificuld to sell the tickets of December already so...

What's the official source on this... has it been posted online anywhere? I don't see it mentioned anywhere other than here, so far.

Edward - October 29, 2009 06:18 PM (GMT)
It's from an official newsletter you can subscribe to in certain circumstances.

Got it, thanks.

Fantasma da Opera - October 30, 2009 06:22 PM (GMT)
On the website they only announce shows until 24th. But the first plan was to close it on the 30th...and I think that would be more cool but meh :P

Edward - October 31, 2009 09:35 AM (GMT)
Maybe that would be cool ... but the prospect of one more week of a half-full auditorium is very uninviting, isn't it?

Fantasma da Opera - December 27, 2009 08:44 PM (GMT)
Although the show closes on January 24th the number of performances was now enlarged to compensate the lack of shows in December due to the Musical Christmas event.

The show plays now everyday except Mondays.

QUOTE (Fantasma da Opera @ 27 Dec 2009, 10:44 PM)
The show plays now everyday except Mondays.

That's exactly the playing schedule when Rudolf opened in Vienna. Hopefully the last performances are booked to capacity.

Fantasma da Opera - December 28, 2009 10:34 PM (GMT)
Indeed but it has not been the schedule of the 2nd season. They had the show closed 2 days per week. Now they returned to 1.

I hope they are booked but I don't believe it. According to a friend who was recently in Vienna the price of the tickets has dropped and they are offering tickets under any pretext...

Edward - December 28, 2009 11:03 PM (GMT)
Well, I assume ticket sales will increase towards the closing night. There are just about four weeks left. That was always the case with former shows. I think it's a phenomenon.

Fantasma da Opera - January 24, 2010 10:45 PM (GMT)
And that's it. Rudolf left Vienna.

This is likely to conclude the life of the show in Europe. While no official numbers are out yet, Rudolf wasn't able to grab the success it was expected and if it wasn't a flop, again, it was thanks to the fans. I personaly blame the awfull direction of Mr.Levaux and the cuting and cuting of the script. The Budapest one was good, but they, instead of fixing what was wrong in the Hungarian version, went for a big rewrite.
Still it had a fair run. I however don't see the show playing anywhere else. MAYBE in Germany but I highly doubt that will happen. Let us see if it returns to Hungary where it had a much more successful run and to Japan.
