http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWWHSArn7hQChess has always been a bit of a fragmented show, and there isn't one defining production (the same can be said of many of Wildhorn's shows). This concert version attempts to create somewhat finalized version. It boasts an all-star cast, including:
Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Kerry Ellis, Marti Pellow, David Bedella, and Clarke Peters. For the most part, the performers do a good job in their roles. Josh Groban, who is not known for his musical theatre acting/singing, exceeded my expectations and Kerry Ellis steals the show in her AMAZING rendition of "Someone Else's Story." Idina and a few others failed to impress me too much, but this is still a GREAT DVD for fans of
Chess. The show has been mutiliated into many different forms, but they've chosen to go back to the basics with this production. The story is complex and a bit hard to follow still, but it involves themes of political corruption and forbidden romances. The music is very captivating to me, but admittedly not for everyone.
