:D True, indeed! I voted early, and spent Election Day sign-waving with fellow Obama supporters. And now, my home state of Hawaii has given him the biggest margin of victory out of any state! Only the DC area surpassed us. B)

Here's to a long, successful presidency!

Today Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America.

For those of you who would like to watch his stirring inaugural address, you can watch it here:

I really am proud to refer to this man as my president. While it is foolish to march blindly beside a young and charismatic leader, I have a great deal of hope under the leadership of President Obama.

They aired the Presidential cerimony in TV here... honestly...I just hope all of those who trust so much in President Hussein won't get the disapointment of their lives... :P I've heard him made many promisses wich, for someone who is paying attention to the Worlds economy are clearly demagogical speaches but may of course give hope to those who aren't.
History has had many "Baracks" and none of them did what they promissed to do... So I wouldn't put my hopes high with him either...

Cynical or optimistic attitudes aside, it's way too soon to assume anything about his presidency. I will say he is very audacious to take on the amount of things he has, but he's also been very realistic about all of them. In his inaugural speech, he lays out the facts that things are bad and he is going to try to help. He's not saying things will magically get better now that he is president. He's a symbol of hope to a lot of people, and that's really what people need right now. Over time, that symbol will likely fade and we'll see if he's done anything REAL by then. There has also been a HUGE majority shift to the Democrats (liberal party) in our Congress. The problem with liberals is that they are very rarely united under a single purpose like conservatives are, and they often argue within their own party just as much as they do with the opposing party. That's obviously going to damper Obama's progress a bit as well.

All I know is that I've had Bush as a president for far too long and he's done almost nothing good for this country by anyone's standards. I don't think other countries are aware of how unpopular he was here nearly as much as he was around the world. That being said, it's stupid to march blindly behind Obama as I said. History also produced Hitler in Germany.

What amazes me is that Clinton faced impeachment over a mere affair! What about Bush??

libradude - January 22, 2009 04:00 PM (GMT)
Bush relied on fear tactics to justify all of his controversial actions. That's how he got narrowly re-elected four years ago as well. It's only been within the last couple years that the vast majority of Americans have realized just how corrupt the guy is. Whether or not our history books choose to remember him that way is too early to say, but I will always remember him as the guy who thrust us into two essentially pointless wars, helped cause the current economic meltdown, and destroyed diplomatic relations with other countries around the world.

Perhaps its my non-American vision of the things that allows me a more cold judgment...G.W.Bush wasn't the best president. No point denying that. But within his limitations he was forced to face the 9/11. I don't know if any other president wouldn't have reacted the same way has he did.
History says that, sometimes, you have to make war to achieve peace. And he trully believed it. And then you can't forget Bush didn't acted alone. He was surrounded by a cabinet who basicly controled the strings.

I never understood why an affair should overthrone Clinton, true, but I also don't think Bush was that much devil as many like to paint him. The economic meltdown wasn't his fault alone. The economy today is global, and as it is, the USA no longer are the responsible for that. Here in Europe for example, the USA had little to do with it. We are facing the same economic crisis because many of our banks acted during years in curruption and thrusted blindly in expeculation. The European Central Bank kept raising taxes higher and higher even when the economies were showing lack of capacity to go along with those raises. That's why the European countries are now facing crisis. The american problem, as I understand it was somehow different.
The war may be an argument, but there's the other side of it wich is, the USA also gain much with the war. Just not enough to balance against the huge losses that came from a clumbsy way of runing the war. The atack on Iraq was the cherry on the top of the cake. There were no reasons whatsoever to declare War on Iraq except some greedy guys in Government. Actually, Iraq was much better with Sadam than it is without him... and yes that's Bush's Government's fault.
But the war on Afghanistan was pretty justified and it was indeed necessary. There are other wars that were necessary, like against Iran, but there they were perfectly aware that they couldn't win...

I don't want to envolve this Forum in discussions about politics....but I love these topics so much... :P :D
